Orange County Register “Jobs” columnist Michelle V. Rafter quoted the following in a 2014 article:
- Roughly 2.6 percent of U.S. employees work from home, not including the self-employed, according to Global Workplace Analytics.
- The San Diego workplace researcher expects that number to jump 21 percent by 2016.
- A Stanford University study found that employees who telecommute or work remotely are 13.5 percent more productive, and quit at half the rate of office-based workers.
Edward Estipona, President of the Estipona Group for the past 22 years, has an entire company with its more than a dozen employees who fall into this “virtual” category: Estipona Group does not have a bricks-and-mortar building, or a granite conference table, or a public display case full of trophies.
But what it does have: a collection of professionally fulfilled team members who get the work done and don’t require hand-holding.
Estipona’s virtual model began in 2009 as a cost-saving business measure; but now, many years down the virtual road, the reason for the “remote” (in name only) workforce is not driven by the bottom line. Instead, it is because the model works for the team, and Estipona has watched his own productivity statistics soar (98 percent productivity before 2009; average of 146% ever since).
